Largest Building in the World! New Century Global Center – China

Earlier in the semester I had the opportunity to travel to the New Century Global Center in Chengdu, which is the largest (not tallest) building in the world at 18,000,000 sq ft! A few of my friends from school and I were able to spend the day there at their very own beach and waterpark (yes, they have an indoor beach!). In addition to the water park, the New Century Global Center is home to two hotels, an Imax theatre, ice skating rink, basketball arena, and every retail store that you could dream of. It was amazing to see the sheer size of the building, and appears to be another example of China’s eagerness to gain worldwide recognition and put the city of Chengdu on the map.
Having lived in Chengdu for over two months now, it is evident to me how rapidly the city is expanding via new construction projects. In addition to the New Century Global Center (which opened this September to the public), Chengdu is currently constructing 5 new subway lines, and has also finalized plans to complete construction of a new airport by 2018. Although it can be a hassle to get around with construction projects taking place in many areas of Chengdu, it has been an excellent firsthand experience of China’s rapidly growing economy. I can’t even begin to imagine what China will look like ten or twenty years from now!
